The recent success of Lil Nas X with his ‘Old Town Road‘ made us think of a much-discussed phenomenon in the music industry. Do you know when an artist explodes with a massive hit and then disappears after a few songs? They are usually called one-hit wonders. Working with music is not easy. It takes perseverance and not everyone has it.
Having said that, we have selected for you, some of the most memorable one-hit wonders. Let’s see if you remember them.
Desiigner – Panda
”Panda”, released in 2015, was a huge success thanks to Kanye West. Yeezy co-opted Desiigner‘s memorable hook for “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2”. Despite initial criticism because of the similarity to Future, ”Panda” achieved worldwide success. Unfortunately, he subsequently failed to reach the same numbers with his following projects. After ”Timmy Turner” and ”Outlet” seems to have disappeared. Have you heard more about him?
Bobby Shmurda – Hot N*gga
Bobby Shmurda is a special case. After the song’s viral success, Shmurda was signed to Epic Records, and the song was officially released as his debut single under Epic. The song topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart, and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually being certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. However, he could not continue his musical career for legal reasons. On December 18, 2014, New York City Police arrested Pollard, and he was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession and reckless endangerment. In 2016, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison for seven years, which was reduced to five due to credit for the two years served to await trial counting towards the sentence. His last appearance is in the track with 6ix9ine, ‘Stoopid‘.
O.T. Genasis – CoCo
Anyone knows this song. It’s played in every hip-hop events. The words ‘I’m in love with the coco’ get the whole crowd crazy. O.T. Genasis’ subsequent singles weren’t enough to make him a space in the scene. Honorable mention for ‘Everybody Mad’ that Beyoncé used as part of her Coachella 2018 performance.
Sir Mix-A-Lot – Baby Got Back
As soon as Sir Mix-a-lot‘s ‘Baby Got Back’ comes on, everyone shout “Oh my god Becky, look at her butt!” Interestingly, the track didn’t chart in the top 40 in the UK although it did go to number 1 in the US back in ’92. Since then the only other charting song Sir Mix-A-Lot’s had was ”Jump On It” which went to a mere number 97 in 1996. Since then he’s done a bit of production work, some voiceover work and was in a viral video when he performed the hit song with an orchestra.
Fort Minor – Remember The Name
It’s a good thing Mike Shinoda has Linkin Park to fall back on. Fort Minor, his musical side project, started big, but after few singles, pretty much, disappeared. In 2015 ‘Welcome’ was released but no attention was given.
OG Maco – U Guessed It
OG Maco is s best known for his 2014 debut single “U Guessed It” which went viral and peaked at number 90 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Later on, he had personal problems that slowed down his musical career. On July 28, 2016, OG Maco was in a near-fatal car accident. Maco suffered multiple skull fractures, cracked vertebrae, a broken orbital, heart palpitations, and almost lost his right eye. His eyesight became extremely distorted, so he had to wear an eye-patch during his subsequent recovery. Also, OG Maco was diagnosed by doctors as having a flesh-eating disease known as necrotizing fasciitis which has left the rapper’s face disfigured. The rapper is currently taking antibiotics for treatment and hoping for a speedy recovery. However, an official statement by OG Maco regarding the accident and words on the future of his music career have not yet been disclosed.
Rob $tone – Chill Bill
Rob $tone released his first song “Chill Bill” on June 10, 2014, on his SoundCloud. He wrote the song in the back of a police car. Stone then went on to release his debut mixtape Straight Bummin’ on February 8, 2015. Stone then released the song as his debut single on June 17, 2016. The song debuted at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has so far reached number 29 on the chart. The official remix of the song features American rappers DRAM, Denzel Curry, and Cousin Stizz. In September 2016, Stone released his second mixtape I’m Almost Ready. The following year he released his official album, Don’t wait for it but it wasn’t so successful.
Sean Kingston – Beautiful Girls
In addition to ‘Beautiful Girls’, he also had success with’ Eenie Meenie ‘and ‘Beat it’. Later on, he had problems with Migos, The Game, and Meek Mill and it was the beginning of the end for Sean.
Iyaz – Replay
At his debut, Iyaz seemed destined to become a start in the music wort, but instead, after the boom of his first single, he fell down. The song reached the top of the charts all over the world and dominated the scenes for months both in America and in Europe. But the hype obtained by Iyaz with this song immediately faded away.
Baha Men – Who Let The Dogs Out
“Who Let The Dogs Out” truly defined the year 2000 when it was released, even winning the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Unfortunately, all their subsequent works failed to attract the same attention. The latest single ‘Ride with me’ dates back to 2015.
