Maryland rapper IDK (formerly known as Jay IDK) just dropped his studio debut album, Is He Real?. The 12-track effort contains features from JID, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, DMX, Burna Boy and more, while production is handled by the likes of BLWYRMND, Obi Nwadije, Frank Dukes, Rascal, and more. The project arrives as a follow-up to last year’s IDK & FRIENDS EP and serves as IDK’s first full-length since 2017’s IWASVERYBAD.
One notable cut, Frank Ocean, was unfortunately scrubbed from the album at the last-minute due to clearance issues.
“I had to take Frank Ocean off of the album because I didn’t get the clearance in time. Frank Ocean is my favorite artist of this generation and I would have pushed the album back again but I couldn’t do that to my fans. I do appreciate his team for reaching out to get it cleared.”
The rapper explained.
Like his previous work, Is He Real? is highly conceptual in execution, playing out in a way that’s both particular and scattershot; clearly, IDK understands the construct of the album as a means of storytelling and uses it to his advantage. The end result is a musical mish-mash of brevity, eclectic production, insane flows, introspection, and much more. There’s something for everyone really, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Is He Real? emerge atop a few more niche year-end lists.
