Rihanna’s highly anticipated 2019 Savage x Fenty New York Fashion Week show is now available to view on Amazon Prime.
Savage x Fenty is the direct-to-consumer lingerie brand Rihanna and Techstyle Fashion Group launched in 2018. It’s all about body-positivity and most items can be purchased for less than $60 (about £48, AU$87). Styles range from tame monochromatic microfiber garments to edgier lacy animal prints. The brand got a $50 million infusion last month from rapper Jay-Z’s venture capital firm Marcy Venture Partners and growth-equity firm Avenir Growth Capital following a strong first year.
Savage X Fenty’s big, bold runway New York Fashion Week show took place last week at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The theatrical production featured bright lights, pulsating music, and models of all colors, shapes, sizes, including two pregnant ones, sashaying through moving biomes. Big names on the catwalk included Rihanna herself, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Normani, Joan Smalls, Laverne Cox, Aquaria, Hailee Steinfeld, Vanessa Hudgens, and Kacey Musgraves.
It featured performances from artists including Migos, Big Sean, ASAP Ferg, DJ Khaled, Diplo, Skrillex, Fabolous, Halsey. It also included appearances by Normani (who performed dance choreography set to Sean Paul’s ‘Get Busy’) and 21 Savage.
“It’s the future—there’s no comparing it to anything”
declares Parris Goebel, choreographer and creative director of the show. If you’ve never heard of Parris, the first thing to know is that, according to Rihanna, she is “a badass bitch.” As she told The Cut after this show taped earlier this month:
“I don’t care about any skinny Victoria’s Secret model when I look at Parris. I want to be that woman on the inside. I want to feel that bombastic. She gives me so much hope.”
You’ve also probably seen the New Zealand native’s work, even if you don’t know her name (yet): Along with her dance crew ReQuest, she starred in the music video for Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’, and she’s choreographed for Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Ciara, and Jennifer Lopez.
